Genesis of a new character
Characters are the engine that drives any plot—which makes the question, “Which is more important? Character or plot?” redundant. You can’t have one without the other. The next question is, “Where do your characters come from?” And the answer is, “From just about anywhere.” Case in point: Alice Chalmers, the grungy girl mechanic who appeared…
Carrick House: releasing May 21
I’m delighted to share with you the cover and summary for Carrick House, a fun little short story set in the Magnificent Devices world. I’ve had so many reader letters begging me not to let the adventure end that I had to keep writing–because to own the truth, I don’t want it to end, either!…
Send in the clowns … and I’m gone
I have never liked the circus. Mum and dad only took us once that I can remember, but I had a miserable time. Those poor animals. All those people. And the clowns. Man, those clowns would come running up into the stands and I’d be scrooched back so far on my bench in sheer terror and…
Enhanced Editions with iBooks
Yesterday, fellow author Jennifer Skully and I met on the Apple campus to beta test some authoring software for the smart folks @iBooks. Neither of us knew what to expect … but we both came away madly excited! Those of you who use iThings probably know about iBooks Author, a nifty product that allows you…
Interview on new steampunk site
Coffee Time Romance is a long-established review site. They contacted me some time ago to say they were establishing a whole new section for the steampunk genre, and would I like to be one of their featured authors to help them launch the site? Needless to say, I told them I would love to be…
Ha! Gore Verbinski stole my idea
In Magnificent Devices, Andrew Malvern (spoiler alert!) is imprisoned atop a pinnacle cell—a spire of rock from which there is no escape. Have you seen the first few seconds of the trailer for The Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp? Methinks Mr. Verbinski has been reading the Devices series (well, a girl can dream, can’t she?):…

Just bought it! Thanks for letting us know. I’ve been waiting impatiently. The story is so much fun.

Thanks, Julia! Writing them is just as much fun … It brings back the joy again!
Bought it! Been wondering — who does those spectacular book covers for you!?
Thank you! I hope you enjoy the book. The art is by the amazing Claudia at phatpuppyart.com, and I have a friend do the lettering. I love these covers, too!
Yea!!!
Oh man oh man oh man. I’m 79% of the way through re-reading the second book, and popped over here to remind myself when the third was coming and discover it’s OUT ALREADY?! My day has just been made.
And I hope you like the dashing character of Captain IAN Hollys 🙂
Ha, yeah. I admit to laughing out loud when I discovered he was described as “dashing” in the very first paragraph he was introduced.
I literally just finished Her Own Devices and was like “Ohh I REALLY want Magnificent Devices-When does it come out?” And then I looked it up and happily discovered it was today! I have been loving the series so far and can’t wait to read this third installment! Will this releasing in book form at some point? I don’t mind kindle books but I really prefer hard copies.
I’m so glad you’re enjoying them 🙂 Yes, I plan on a print edition by Thanksgiving. It takes a little longer than digital, as you can imagine, but it’s coming!
Yay!
I just saw that the third one was out and re-read the first two, then devoured the third! I think the books get even better. I am thrilled there will be a fourth.
Thank you, Tori! I’m having so much fun with them it’s hard to stop 🙂
